Members battle Working Garage Fire Thursday, June 21, 2012 21:02 - Around 2102 hours Thursday night, Command (Asst. Chief Norris) contacted Kent Center and asked if they had any reports of a structure fire in the district. Kent Center advised they were taking numerous calls on a possible field or woods fire and dispatched Station 51 as such. At 21:03 Command arrived on scene of a large garage fire in the 2000 block of Crystal Rd. Command requested Kent Center alert for a working alarm and for the operations switched to a TAC Channel. Kent Center re-alerted Station 51 and alerted Station 56 (Marydel) and switched to operations to TAC4. The garage was fully involved and the roof had already collapsed. Engine 51-3 (Lt. Moriarty w/ 5) laid 1400' of 5" supply line up the lane and pulled a 2.5" inch blitz line to the alpha side and a 1.75" handline to the delta side. Squirt 51-7 (Chief Morris w/ 7) was placed on the alpha side of the structure and prepared the unit for elevated master stream operations. Tanker 51 (Dep. Chief Connors w/ 5) picked up the supply line and handled the water supply operations. Crews attacked the fire from both the alpha and delta side. The squirt was placed in service to knock the majority of the fire down inside the structure. Command requested Clayton's Engine 45-4 (Lt. Carrow w/6) to respond into the scene and Cheswold's Engine 43-3 (Asst. Chief Whitby w/5) was alerted to cover Station 51. Crews from Rescue 56-3 with Lt. Madden and Engine 56-1 with Capt. Mills assisted with fire suppression and cut two holes on the bravo side to allow for better access to the fire. A crew was sent in to the adjacent house to check for any extension into the residence. Water supply utilized Tanker 56 (Asst. Chief Barr w/ 2), Engine 51-5 (Lt. Tigner w/4), and Engine 45-4 in a water shuttle from the scene to the Station 51 to maintain adequate water flow.Command also requested the next due Rescue Company alerted for manpower due to the high temperature and humidity. Station 46 (Dover) responded with Rescue 46-1 under the direction of Chief Fortney and Engine 46-3 under the direction of Asst. Chief Troubetaris. All crews worked through the heat to pull the fallen tin out of the structure with the assistance of a backhoe. Crews were rotated out to cool off and replenish fluids. The situation was placed under control at 21:40 and after an extensive overhaul, the last unit cleared at 00:06. FM 13 handled the investigation.
